Turkey has summoned Ukraine’s ambassador in Ankara after two Turkish-operated vessels were targeted in separate incidents in the Black Sea, sharply raising tensions between Ankara and Kyiv.

The latest escalation follows the Lider Bordo Mavi, which was struck off the Russian Black Sea port of Tuapse on August 26, followed a day later by the targeting of Lider Kocatepe, which had been sent to assist and tow the damaged vessel. Turkish officials subsequently summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Nariman Dzhelialo and stressed the need to protect lives, property, navigation and the marine environment.

The incident is significant because Turkey maintains relations with both Russia and Ukraine and has repeatedly attempted to position itself as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war. At the same time, Turkish commercial vessels regularly use the Black Sea, making maritime security a direct strategic and economic concern for Ankara.

This is also not an isolated incident. Earlier in August, Turkish-owned civilian vessels Yaşar and Nadezhda were attacked by unmanned aerial vehicles after leaving Novorossiysk, with crew members, including Turkish citizens, injured. Turkey warned that the expansion of the Russia-Ukraine war into the Black Sea could have serious consequences for navigation and even global food security.
