Die CDU mit ihrem Spitzenkandidaten und Landesvorsitzenden Manuel Hagel hatte bis in den Herbst hinein in den Umfragen einen soliden Vorsprung von rund zehn Punkten vor den Grünen mit ihrem Spitzenkandidaten, dem ehemaligen Bundeslandwirtschaftsminister Cem Özdemir. Daraus ist in der Endphase des Wahlkampfes ein Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen geworden: Zehn Tage vor der Wahl lagen die CDU mit 28 Prozent und die Grünen mit 27 Prozent in der ARD-Vorwahlumfrage fast gleichauf.
