L'imminente intervento "preventivo" era ormai nell'aria da qualche mese, con gli USA che, dopo la "guerra dei dodici giorni" di giugno 2025, sono tornati a suonare l'allarme su una produzione iraniana di armi nucleari. Anche se questa volta la situazione sembra non essere destinata a risolversi entro breve termine, dopo la morte dell'ayatollah Ali Khamenei e i ripetuti contrattacchi iraniani verso Israele e verso le basi USA presenti in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrein, Emirati Arabi Uniti.
Non si sono fatte attendere le condanne dei leader europei. Ursula von der Leyen ha definito gli attacchi iraniani "ingiustificabili" e "indiscriminati", sottolineando che "non possono rimanere senza risposta" per proteggere civili e alleati. Ha parlato di "transizione credibile urgente in Iran" e "percorso aperto verso un Iran diverso", aprendo a un possibile cambio di regime. "È di fondamentale importanza - ha scritto su X subito dopo l'attacco - garantire la sicurezza nucleare e prevenire qualsiasi azione che possa ulteriormente aggravare le tensioni o indebolire il regime globale di non proliferazione". Commenti simili sono stati fatti da Macron, Starmer, Merz e Kallas. Ma tra i leader europei, uno ha commentato in maniera differente.
"Possiamo rilasciare dichiarazioni diplomatiche forti, possiamo condannare. Ma questo non cambierà nulla dell'attacco militare contro l'Iran". Lo ha detto il premier slovacco Robert Fico con un video rilasciato sui suoi social. "Con l'attacco all'Iran assistiamo all'ennesima dimostrazione del totale collasso dell'ordine mondiale e del completo disprezzo del diritto internazionale. I grandi e i potenti fanno quello che vogliono. L'ONU è impotente e noi piccoli possiamo solo stare a guardare e lamentarci".
