Les aurores boréales surviennent lorsque des particules de vent solaire chargées en électricité rencontrent le champ magnétique terrestre. Si l’origine de ces époustouflantes marbrures lumineuses n’est plus mystérieuse, de nouvelles études s’intéressent désormais à leurs conséquences, parfois néfastes. Ces phénomènes naturels influencent notamment le comportement des animaux et peuvent bouleverser certaines infrastructures. Dans des cas extrêmes, les aurores boréales peuvent même endommager des satellites, perturber le trafic aérien et les lignes à haute tension, voire paralyser les réseaux de télécommunication. Le documentaire s'intéresse également à leurs répercussions possibles sur la composition chimique et la température de l’atmosphère.
