Homo sapiens est apparu il y a environ trois cent mille ans. Et depuis, l’espèce humaine ne cesse de "mettre à jour" son logiciel génétique, au gré de mutations et de la pression sélective du milieu. Mais dans nos sociétés modernes, où les progrès scientifiques permettent de surmonter les contraintes imposées par l’environnement, la théorie darwinienne de la "survie des plus aptes" s’applique-t-elle encore ? Et qu’en sera-t-il demain ? Notre répertoire génétique nous permettra-t-il de nous adapter, à court, moyen ou long terme, aux nouveaux défis environnementaux comme le dérèglement climatique ?
Transmission culturelle
En matière d’évolution humaine, la clé pourrait aussi bien résider dans nos capacités psychiques – et dans notre culture, une autre forme de transmission – que dans nos aptitudes physiques… Aux côtés de chercheurs en génétique et d’une athlète spécialiste de l’ultratrail – un exemple radical d’adaptation à court terme à des conditions extrêmes –, un voyage scientifique et philosophique étonnant.
