🔴The Narcissist's Final Control Tactic May Look Like a Heartfelt ApologyYou may have waited so long for an apology that hearing one makes the room soften. The voice is quieter. The blame seems to stop. For a moment, you can imagine setting down everything you have been carrying. If that happens, you aren't weak. You're responding to the possibility of repair. The question is whether the apology opens that possibility or uses your hope to restore the old arrangement.
Perhaps they say exactly what you once begged them to understand. They admit that you were hurt. They describe their fear of losing you. They remember details that make you feel seen again. None of those words is automatically false. But words can be moving before their meaning has been tested. Your relief deserves room without being required to make a lasting decision on the evening it arrives.
An apology can express genuine remorse, an attempt to regain access, or feelings that are mixed and not fully understood. We can't determine all of that from tone or tears. We can examine what the apology asks of you and what follows it. Does it leave room for your questions and pace, or does accepting the words require returning immediately to the conditions that made an apology necessary?
