Trump On Iran: Regime Change "Would Be the Best Thing That Could Happen" | Firstpost

US President Donald Trump has hinted that regime change in Iran “would be the best thing that could happen,” escalating rhetoric amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. Speaking to reporters, Trump said Iran has spent “47 years talking,” while warning that if negotiations fail, consequences could follow. However, he declined to name who he would prefer to lead Iran if a change in power were to occur. The Trump administration has also stepped up its military posture in West Asia, confirming that the USS Gerald R. Ford — the world’s largest aircraft carrier — will deploy to the region very soon. Earlier, the US had deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln along with a 12-ship carrier strike group. Trump said that instilling “fear” may sometimes be necessary to secure a deal. The remarks come amid indirect US–Iran talks, with the last round held in Oman on February 6. Tensions have also been heightened by deadly anti-government protests in Iran, with reports claiming thousands killed and tens of thousands arrested. Trump has previously warned against a harsh crackdown on protesters.
