Probabilmente, né una né l'altra. Il ministro della Difesa si affretta oggi a dare una spiegazione sul mancato sbarco in Italia, nella base di Sigonella, dei bombardieri USA diretti in Medio Oriente: "Qualcuno sta cercando di far passare il messaggio che l’Italia avrebbe deciso di sospendere l’uso delle basi agli assetti USA. Cosa semplicemente falsa", dice Crosetto frenando gli entusiasmi di chi aveva richiamato alla sovranità. Il "no" italiano inviato agli aerei USA - peraltro già in volo - però, non è così scontato come sembra si voglia far passare.
È vero, come dice Crosetto, che non è stato fatto nulla di straordinario, in quanto già previsto dagli accordi bilaterali del 1954: il cosiddetto "Accordo Ombrello". Ma in un contesto di una certa volatilità del diritto internazionale - che vale "fino a un certo punto", per citare Antonio Tajani -, snobbato spesso, appunto, proprio dagli Stati Uniti d'America, rimanere fermi sui propri princìpi e non sorvolare su certi accordi, rappresenta sì una decisione. Una dimostrazione che invece Crosetto e Meloni sembrano a posteriori voler minimizzare, ribadendo il persistere del valore della lealtà, nonostante quel "no" già previsto dall'accordo. La domanda a questo punto, però, è: se quel patto non ci fosse mai stato, Crosetto avrebbe comunque detto di no agli USA?
