The Final Fantasy 7 remake is one of the most frustrating games I’ve played in recent memory because it’s constantly at odds with itself; caught in the crossroads of what it can be, what it wants to be, and what it unfortunately is. What was once the most requested video game remake of all time has now become the most controversial. For a story about defying destiny, its own fate was unavoidable. When you remake something as universally loved as Final Fantasy 7, you’re playing with fire. People have a deep attachment to what they enjoy. So when what they love is morphed and altered to be unrecognizable, it inadvertently signals that they like the wrong thing. And if there’s one constant that defines the Final Fantasy 7 remake, it would be those differences.
When talking about remakes, you’re often forced to pick a side. Either you’re all for it or completely against it. I’m not here to take a side. If you’re watching this video hoping that I’m going to rip this game to shreds or act like it’s an objective improvement, then you’re in the wrong place. The FF7 remake is neither a masterpiece nor a disgrace, but it does fail to accomplish its mission statement, and that is where the real nuance lies. In trying to please everyone, Square Enix pleased no one. Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a serious identity crisis, and it’s one entirely of its own making.
