Your smartwatch says you burned 800 calories. But… did you?

Caya bought a bunch of the most popular fitness trackers and put them to the test: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, Google Pixel, Coros, and Oura Ring.

And the numbers were all over the place.

So we went a little further. We tested them against actual oxygen consumption and CO2 output using VO2 equipment—the kind of data these watches are ultimately trying to estimate.

Along the way, we went down a much bigger rabbit hole: what a calorie actually is, how your body turns food into energy, the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise, and why obsessing over the calorie number on your wrist might be missing the point entirely.

The final test? One tracker landed almost exactly on the VO2 measurement. Others… not so much. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
