Doch ab Sommer sollen Touristen für den Besuch der Kathedrale Eintritt zahlen. Die Domverwaltung begründet die Entscheidung mit deutlich gestiegenen Kosten für Betrieb, Sicherheit und Instandhaltung des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. Für Gottesdienstbesucher bleibt der Zugang weiterhin kostenfrei. Kritiker sehen darin einen Bruch mit der Tradition offener Kirchenräume. Befürworter halten die Maßnahme für notwendig, um das historische Bauwerk dauerhaft zu erhalten. Der Schritt zeigt ein Grundproblem vieler europäischer Kathedralen: steigende Kosten bei gleichzeitig wachsendem Besucherandrang.
