Syria’s al-Sharaa balances domestic order as Israel seeks to expand buffer zone: Analysis
Syrian government forces have begun withdrawing heavy equipment from the southern city of Suwayda, as part of a ceasefire agreement with Druze religious leaders.At least 169 people were killed in violence in the region this week.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has accused Israel of sowing divisions and conflict in his country.
Israeli forces bombed central Damascus on Wednesday in what it claims was support for the Druze minority.
Israeli ground forces have also been moving deeper into the Syrian Golan Heights, effectively expanding Israel's illegal occupation.
Since the fall of President Bashar al Assad last year, Israeli forces have seized what had been a de-militarised buffer zone.
The UN says the move violates the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria.
Marco Vicenzino, a global strategy adviser and geopolitical risk specialist, says Syria’s leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has bowed to reality by withdrawing government forces from Suwayda, as he is not in a position to maintain troops there in light of Israeli attacks.
