Maruti Suzuki has plenty of engineering capacity of its own. It still builds technology with startups. In his words, a pilot is a hobby, and production deployment is a habit. The ones that stall get possessive about the technology instead of the problem it was meant to solve.
He also walks through how Maruti closed the gap between startup pace and enterprise process: a dedicated innovation team that onboards startups, defined problem areas, mentoring through academic partners, paid POCs, and a fundraising program for founders.
His advice to founders is two things: customer focus and scale in mind. His advice to large enterprises is one line. If each one adopted a single startup, the ecosystem would move.
