An Ode to My Father. And the Essay He Wrote at 22.

Today my father would have turned 77. Instead of spending the day missing him, I wanted to introduce you to him. This is an ode to my father, and to something he left behind. An essay he wrote in 1971, when he was just 22 years old, about his favourite character from a film. He thought he was describing someone on a screen. He didn't know yet that he was describing himself.

In this episode I read his words out loud for the first time, and I talk about the man he became. The writer he wanted to be and never got the chance to become. The way he gave all his joy to the world and quietly kept his sorrow to himself. His favourite line, from his favourite film, was that life should be large, not long. By that measure, he lived an enormous one.
