Penuaan menjadi bagian hidup manusia secara alami sehingga perlu dihargai dan diterapkan secara bijaksana agar hidup di usia senja lebih bermakna. Namun, lansia kerap distigmakan dengan ketergantungan, keterbatasan, bahkan sebagai objek iba yang perlu diupayakan untuk diredefinisi. Maka dari itu, setiap 29 Mei diperingati Hari Lanjut Usia Nasional sebagai momentum penting untuk meningkatkan kesadaran tentang hak dan kesejahteraan serta bentuk penghormatan para lansia di Indonesia.
