In this video, Matthew King reacts to a live 2024 performance, at the O2 Arena in London, of Chris Martin's song 'Fix You' by Jacob Collier and Chris Martin. Matthew King responds to the musical effects and gestures within the performance and discusses the ancient connection between music and worship and asks some broad sociological questions about the interrelationship of music, spirituality and celebrity.
The purpose of this video is not to denigrate Jacob Collier or Chris Martin (both musicians whom I respect) but to give a spontaneous analytical reaction, which considers some deeper meanings beneath the surface of contemporary popular performance practice. It is important to affirm that the whole performance has the appearance of something charming and life-affirming, and what could be less offensive in these dark times than Jacob Collier & Chris Martin singing so beatifically together? I am very aware of the enormous popularity of this performance and I understand why so many audience members and viewers were moved by the interaction of the 2 musicians. Music, with its extraordinary emotional impact on our emotions is - as Plato observed a long time ago - a potentially dangerous phenomenon, and (as with all human artefacts) accepting its power uncritically, without objectivity or an awareness of its mechanisms, is unwise, especially in an era of mass-media manipulation. Sometimes an objective, critical view of a phenomenon which is so widely admired can be unpopular. My personal view is that ALL music can (and should) be viewed objectively, and not merely received uncritically as 'the coolest thing ever'.
