Doch zum Jubiläumsgipfel in Washington bestimmt die Fitness des Gastgebers, US-Präsident Joe Biden, die Schlagzeilen. Dabei steht das auf 32 Alliierte gewachsene Bündnis vor ernsten Herausforderungen. Vor allem braucht es Garantien für eine stetige militärische Unterstützung der Ukraine, auch wenn Donald Trump, der republikanische Kontrahent Bidens, bei der Präsidentenwahl im November gewinnen sollte. Weit oben auf der Tagesordnung der Staats- und Regierungschefs steht ebenfalls, dass China militärisch die demokratische Insel Taiwan bedroht und Nachbarn in der indopazifischen Region versucht einzuschüchtern.
