💈✨ Traditional Japanese Lantern Artist's Amazing Barbershop | Hair Wash & Massage In Aomori 🇯🇵Killing Time barbershop has been around for 50 years and is owned by Mr. Kurotaki, a quirky, cat-loving, 3rd-generation lantern artist 🖌️✨🐈
Ever since hearing about this special place a few years ago from Mr. Kajikawa in Misasa, we’ve been wanting to visit!
Inside this cozy shop lanterns hang overhead, antiques and figurines are tucked everywhere, and an old kerosene heater warms the room. Sitting on top are water kettles hissing and steaming away.
Since Mr. Kurotaki is quite camera-shy, our friend Kiyo-san graciously stepped in as a guest barber 💈🙌🏼 Kiyo-san was in the process of closing his barbershop before moving to New York so everything worked out❣️
We all had too much fun hearing some of Mr. Kurotaki’s stories, looking at his antique collections, and seeing him work on his lanterns ✨ On our 2nd day of visiting, Mr. Kurotaki allowed me to take his photo.
Mr. Kurotaki jokingly told us, "I haven’t had new customers for about 30 years.”
He says if he's busy working on a lantern order and a customer walks in, there's a good chance he'll tell them to try another barber instead! With deadlines to meet and lanterns to finish, barbering sometimes has to wait. Fortunately, his longtime regulars seem to understand.
Although the official shop name is Killing Time, all his customers call it Barbershop Sengari and that’s the name that stuck.
Mr. Kurotaki’s interest in antiques goes all the way back to his first date with his wife. He remembers she wanted to go to a used goods shop and as he looked around, he thought, “What a unique girl?!" 💕
🌸 Life advice? “Have wonderful encounters.”
