El restaurante llevaba 25 años abierto cuando, en la mañana del 11 de septiembre de 2001, los ataques al World Trade Center destruyeron la Torre Norte, en la que se encontraba ubicado. Allí, murieron 79 trabajadores y 91 comensales.
Hablamos con Julie Cohen y Betsy West, codirectoras de “Top of the World”, y Sekou Siby, excocinero de Windows on the World. Siby emigró a Estados Unidos desde Costa de Marfil en 1996; ese 11 de septiembre le tocaba trabajar a la mañana, pero un compañero le pidió que le cambiara el turno. “No sobrevivió”, dice Siby, quien a partir de entonces se convirtió en organizador y dirigente de Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC), una organización social fundada por trabajadores de Windows on the World para promover la ayuda mutua después del ataque.
“La extraordinaria mano de obra inmigrante del Windows [of the World] y lo que construyeron colectivamente es solo un recordatorio de las contribuciones de los neoyorquinos inmigrantes al mundo de la gastronomía y a la cultura de la ciudad”, dice Cohen. “Queremos que la gente recuerde no solo la tragedia, sino la verdadera belleza y las historias concretas de lo que se perdió ese día”.
La película “Top of the World” se estrenó por CNN el lunes 7 de septiembre de 2026.
