Insiden tersebut menyebabkan 37 penumpang tewas, 5 orang hilang, sedangkan 11 penumpang lainnya berhasil diselamatkan.
Menurut Angkatan Laut Vietnam, armada itu merupakan kapal wisata QN-7105 milik warga bernama Doan Van Trinh di distrik Ha An, Kota Quang Yen, Provinsi Quang Ninh, seperti dikutip dari Tienphong.
Kapal itu dikemudikan oleh kapten Doan Van Trinh dengan membawa 53 orang termasuk wisatawan dan kru.
Adapun insiden ini terjadi saat kapal wisata hendak mengunjungi situs Warisan Dunia UNESCO di Teluk Ha Long.
Lokasi kejadian berada di antara Hon Ga dan Gunung Bai Tho, sekitar 3 mil dari daratan.
Sebelum kejadian, hujan turun secara tiba-tiba, langit berubah gelap pada siang hari.
Pekerja kantoran di Teluk Ha Long, Tran Trong Hung mengatakan bahwa badai mulai terjadi sejak sore hari.
Hung bahkan melihat ada hujan es sebesar jari kaki yang disertai dengan hujan deras, badai petir, dan kilat.
Perdana Menteri Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh menyampaikan belasungkawa kepada keluarga korban.
PM Vietnam meminta Kementerian Pertahanan dan Keamanan Publik untuk melakukan pencarian dan penyelamatan segera.
Sementara itu, pihak berwenang akan menyelidiki penyebab insiden tersebut dan menangani pelanggaran secara ketat.
