Children Should Not Inherit Our Wars | Barr. Zannah Mustapha | TEDxMaiduguri
What happens when the children of victims and the children of those responsible for their suffering are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and dream together?Drawing from his extraordinary journey as a humanitarian, philanthropist, and peace mediator, Barrister Zannah Mustapha shares how education can become a powerful instrument of reconciliation in communities fractured by violent conflict.
Reflecting on his childhood, when children of governors, ministers, and ordinary families, Muslims and Christians alike, attended the same schools without discrimination, he challenges the divisions that increasingly define our societies.
Through his experience establishing a school in Maiduguri that brings together children orphaned by the Boko Haram insurgency, including children of victims and those associated with the insurgency, and his involvement in mediation efforts surrounding the Chibok schoolgirls, he demonstrates how compassion, inclusion, and dialogue can bridge even the deepest divides.
His message is both simple and profound: Children should not inherit the hatred, divisions, or conflicts of the generations before them. By creating spaces where they can learn together, we can begin building the foundations for a more peaceful future. Barrister Zannah Bukar Mustapha is a renowned Nigerian human rights lawyer, mediator, and humanitarian who transitioned from a successful 20-year legal career to become a champion for children weaponised or orphaned by conflict. In 2007, he founded the Future Prowess Islamic Foundation School in Maiduguri, Borno State, providing free education, healthcare, and meals to thousands of children.
Crucially, his schools enroll orphans of both Nigerian security forces and Boko Haram insurgents, fostering reconciliation and breaking cycles of generational violence. Celebrated globally for his neutrality and courage, Mustapha served as a key mediator in securing the release of over 100 kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls and has been honoured with prestigious accolades, including the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award, the Aurora Prize, and recognition as a CNN Hero.
