Are Over 9 Million Indians Safe in West Asia Amid US-Iran War? | Spotlight | N18G

In this Spotlight edition, Daniela Laurel explains how more than 9 million Indians living and working across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, make the Gulf one of India's most important migration corridors. But as the US-Iran war grips the region, questions over their safety are growing. Government data shows that hundreds of Indians died in workplace accidents and more than 1,300 died by suicide across the six Gulf nations between 2023 and 2025. Now, the war has added new risks, from disrupted airspace and shipping routes to the threat around the Strait of Hormuz. India has also barred its seafarers from sailing through the waterway and is diversifying its energy sources. So, how safe is the Gulf for Indian workers? And what happens if the conflict continues? We examine the risks, stakes and India's response.
