A shocking double murder has rocked Bangladesh’s Rangpur district, where 75-year-old Hindu freedom fighter (Muktijoddha) Jogesh Chandra Roy and his wife Suborna Roy were found brutally killed with their throats slit inside their home. The elderly couple lived alone, while both of their sons serve in the Bangladesh Police. Neighbours discovered the bodies after repeated attempts to contact them went unanswered.
This brutal killing comes amid a rapidly worsening situation for Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, with rising reports of communal violence, targeted attacks, political instability, and anti-Hindu assaults under the interim administration of Muhammad Yunus. According to minority rights groups, over 2,000 cases of communal attacks were recorded within weeks of the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Awami League leaders have condemned the murder, linking it to the growing influence of Jamaat-e-Islami and the deteriorating law-and-order situation after the 2024 mass unrest in Bangladesh. Human rights groups report widespread attacks on Hindu families, businesses, temples, and freedom fighters (Muktijoddhas).
Police have not yet identified suspects, filed a case, or revealed a motive behind the killings.
A forensic investigation is underway, while locals and veteran freedom fighters have demanded immediate arrests.
