The Supreme Court has granted permission for passive euthanasia—or "death with dignity"—to Harish Rana of Ghaziabad. This marks the first instance in the country where permission for voluntary death has been granted. Although Harish Rana, who has been in an unconscious state for 13 years, is still breathing, he has effectively been confined to his bed like a living corpse since 2013. In its verdict, the Supreme Court observed that there is absolutely no hope for his recovery; continuing his existence would merely prolong his suffering, with no prospect of ever regaining his health. During the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had also interacted with his family members. It was Harish's parents—who had long since abandoned any hope of recovery for their son, now suffering from 100 percent disability—who had petitioned the court to grant him the right to voluntary death.
