Flight deck to the most remote Atlantic island

Today we're flying in the cockpit to one of the most remote airports in the world: onboard Airlink from Johannesburg to St. Helena, almost halfway across the South Atlantic to Brazil. Our aircraft is the Embraer ERJ-190 and we'll be flying to Walvis Bay, Namibia for a refueling stop before heading out three hours over open ocean to this very special runway perched on top of a volcanic rock cliff edge.

Forecast today for the final approach is severe turbulence and severe windshear, which is normal for this Captains only airport. And we've got a great crew to take us there. We'll also speak to the cabin crew and see everything about what goes into this very unique operation, including the ETOPS portion of the sector and how the crew make decisions in order to operate safely into this very unusual and challenging airport with highly changeable weather.
