The Second Tiger
Hoshiai Hasseki vs Hayashi MonnyuHoshiai Hasseki (星合 八碩, 1666–1692) was a pupil of Honinbō Dōsaku and considered one of his five major disciples, (five tigers) alongside Ogawa Dōteki, Sayama Sakugen, Kuwabara Dōsetsu, and Kumagai Honseki. Hasseki passed away at the young age of 27.
He was introduced to Dōsaku as a foster pupil sponsored by the Tōdō clan of the Tsu domain.
At age 17 (1682), he participated in the castle games (御城碁). During his career, Hasseki played a total of 7 castle games, with six victories and one loss.
Hasseki's teacher, Honinbo Dōsaku was known to deliberately rank his pupils one stone lower than their actual strength, indicating Hasseki’s 6-dan rank reflected even greater ability. Upon his early death in 1692, Dōsaku posthumously honored him with the 7-dan rank. Hasseki's recorded games showcase a solid and thick playing style.
Hayashi Monnyū (林 門入, 1640–April 14, 1685) was the second head of the Hayashi school, one of the four major Go houses (家元). He was a disciple of Yasui Sanchi and is believed to have reached the sixth dan, although the exact rank remains unclear.
Monnyū also supported Yasui Sanchi in the dispute that led to the challenge match between Sanchi and Honinbō Dōetsu (see GoldenEra6 and 7), which further solidified his connections with the Yasui family. While Monnyu's rank was recorded to be 6-dan, some sources suggest that he was assigned a 1-stone handicap (sen) to Honinbo Dosaku at the time that Dosaku became Meijin, which would be consistent with Monnyu having a 7-dan rank.
