Kuwait intercepts Iranian missiles as Gulf states condemn attack; US imposes new sanctions on Iran

Kuwait says it has intercepted Iranian missiles and drones launched towards its territory, as regional tensions escalate following Iranian retaliation against US strikes near Bandar Abbas. Several Gulf states, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UAE, have condemned the attack, calling it a major escalation.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says its operation targeted a US airbase in response to earlier American strikes on its southern coastal areas, while warning of further retaliation if attacks continue. Despite the escalation, diplomatic efforts remain underway, even as Washington announces new sanctions targeting a newly created Iranian authority overseeing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US Treasury says any entity cooperating with the body could face penalties, a move Iran says is aimed at tightening pressure over maritime control. In Tehran, officials insist the IRGC Navy continues to enforce authority over shipping lanes and coordinate vessel movement through the Strait, rejecting US pressure.
Amid rising tensions, both sides maintain competing claims over control of the strategic waterway, while negotiations continue behind the scenes with mixed signals from Washington over the direction of talks.
