En Bolivia, miles de personas llenaron las calles de la capital, La Paz, el miércoles 26 de junio, para enfrentarse a los militares que intentaron llevar a cabo un golpe de Estado contra el presidente elegido democráticamente Luis Arce. En un dramático enfrentamiento transmitido en vivo por televisión, el presidente Arce confrontó directamente al comandante militar rebelde, el general Juan José Zúñiga, y le exigió que depusiera su actitud y retirara sus fuerzas.Horas después del fallido golpe de Estado las autoridades bolivianas detuvieron a Zúñiga, y a su presunto co-conspirador, el jefe de la Marina, Juan Arnez. Mientras era detenido, el general Zuñiga le dijo a la prensa que el golpe había sido organizado por el propio Arce para mejorar sus bajos índices de aprobación ciudadana. El mismo miércoles, el presidente Arce juramentó a los nuevos jefes del Ejército, la Marina y la Fuerza Aérea.
