Fortune 500 Advisor: Knowledge No Longer Makes a Leader
What happens to your value when AI can find, in five seconds, what took you five years to learn?Melissa Dawn Simkins has spent 20 years advising Fortune 500 executives and professional athletes, and her answer starts with a memory from age nine. Asked only to say her name, she forgot it the moment the lights came on. She knew her name. Pressure simply switched off the part of her that knew it.
Closing that gap between knowing and performing is what she calls Athleadership. We have trained leaders on knowledge, she argues, and knowledge is exactly what deserts us when the amygdala sounds the alarm. Athletes don't count on knowing. They condition for the moment itself. So where do leaders practise? At work, in real time, with everything at stake. It's the gap behind every call made without complete information and every tense room you need to calm.
And it isn't confined to the office. One woman at a conference realised she led at home the way she led at work, until her husband reminded her he wasn't her employee. Others in her book missed so many birthdays that their friends stopped inviting them to parties. Leadership isn't a title. It's a response.
Her remedy is less heroic than you'd expect: reps. In the gym she trains to failure on purpose, because that's where the muscle shows itself, then recovers stronger. Treat failure the same way, she says, and you stop being afraid of it.
Then Kristina asks what finally gets a seasoned leader off the treadmill before they run on it all the way to the grave. Melissa's answer is more honest than it is inspiring.
