DRC conflict leaves diabetics struggling for insulin amid soaring prices and shortages
In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, ongoing conflict between government forces and M23 rebels is exacerbating a healthcare crisis for people with diabetes. The fighting has disrupted supply chains, leading to severe shortages and skyrocketing prices of insulin, a life-saving medication for diabetics. Pharmacists report widespread scarcity of drugs, with some forced to seek supplies from neighbouring countries. The closure of Goma airport has further complicated the delivery of medicines from the capital, Kinshasa.Despite a US-brokered deal signed in July, renewed fighting has dashed hopes for stability and prompted US sanctions against the rebels. For diabetics caught in the crossfire, accessing essential medication has become as perilous as dodging bullets. The conflict's impact on healthcare systems underscores the far-reaching consequences of political instability on vulnerable populations.
