First-Ever Images of Sun's South Pole Captured by European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter | N18GThe first ever video and images of the Sun's south pole have been released which were captured by the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft. The new images will enable scientists to learn how the Sun cycles between periods of stormy and quiet times. The new images show a shimmering bright atmosphere which in parts reaches temperatures of a million degrees celsius. These are also the most detailed and the closest pictures ever taken by the sun. These observations will also help in knowing how the sun's field flips nearly every 11 years. According to scientists, these changes in the sun's polar magnetic field will be crucial as they will improve forecasting of the solar cycle. The $1.3 billion mission was jointly launched by ESA and NASA from Florida, US, in 2020.
