Facilitation and Humanistic Education with Bosco from Saints and Scholars

This conversation builds on our previous stream explaining the theory and assumptions behind the modern concept of facilitation.

The stream will draw upon our own research including Bosco's new essay which is linked below.

The material covered here begins with a discussion of the Human Potential Movement and humanistic psychology which draws upon millenarianism, Gnosticism and the influence of Calvinism and Pietism as precursors to the Human Potential Movement and to the structure of the encounter group or T-Group.

From there, we discuss Frankfurt as a focal point for the beginnings of the Frankfurt School and of humanistic psychology which are seen as related movements in Western society.

The impact of humanistic psychology on education through the emergence of humanistic education is discussed. Particular emphasis is made to the contributions of Kurt Lewin, Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow and William Coulson.

Critical pedagogy is also discussed as a structure similar to humanistic education. We invoke the contributions of Paulo Freire and Henry Giroux in this context. Both humanistic education and critical pedagogy are contrasted with a classical or Thomist education.
