One common cause of long COVID symptoms and chronic fatigue syndrome is impaired natural killer cell function. These immune cells are responsible for fighting viruses and destroying abnormal cells, including cancer cells. When they stop functioning properly, you could experience persistent exhaustion, chronic inflammation, and brain fog.
Anything that significantly increases cortisol can contribute to the reactivation of latent viruses, triggering post-viral fatigue and other symptoms.
Factors that contribute to viral reactivation include:
• Grief from a loss
• Poor sleep
• Elevated cortisol or synthetic cortisol like prednisone
• Alcohol
• Overtraining
If you’re dealing with long COVID symptoms, it’s not the best time to start an intense new workout routine. Focus on reducing stress, getting high-quality sleep, and supporting your recovery. Intermittent fasting is another strategy discussed for supporting immune and metabolic health.
The following nutrients can help support your immune system, energy production, and long COVID recovery.
• Allithiamine, or vitamin B1: 300 to 600 mg with cofactors B2, B3, and magnesium
• CoQ10: 200 mg
• NADH: 20 mg
• D-ribose: 15 g taken as three 5-gram doses
• Vitamin D: 10,000 IU with zinc as a cofactor
