VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Ladies and gentlemen, something SHOCKING just happened to India's IT industry. On the SAME DAY, on the SAME earnings call, INFOSYS told its investors that their AI business now makes up 8.2% of revenue growing at DOUBLE DIGITS quarter over quarter. And in the same breath, INFOSYS CUT its revenue forecast for the year. A company that grew at 19.7% in FY22 is now expected to grow at just 1.5 to 3 percent. But that's just the beginning. In July 2025, TCS announced 12,000 role cuts and removed 8,000 employees at a cost of ₹1,400 CRORE even though its revenue GREW 4.6% that year. HCL's profit went UP 20 percent but headcount went DOWN by 3,292. Tech Mahindra's profit went UP 28 percent but headcount went DOWN by 863. So the Indian IT industry is GROWING. But it's growing WITHOUT jobs.
Let me take you back to 1999. When the entire world was on the brink of collapse because of a silly computer bug called Y2K. Every bank system, every airline, every power grid was warning that computers would break because 1999 would turn into 1900. America needed MILLIONS of lines of code rewritten. So America turned to INDIA. And a company called INFOSYS led by Narayan Murthy walked in and SAVED the day. That year built the ENTIRE Indian IT industry. TCS, INFOSYS, WIPRO built their entire empire. And this equation lifted MILLIONS of Indians into the middle class. But there was a FATAL FLAW in this business model. And AI has just EXPOSED it.
You see, every big Indian IT company is built on a PYRAMID. At the bottom, thousands of freshers doing repetitive work; testing, boilerplate coding, maintenance, translation, documentation. In the middle, team leads. At the top, a small group of architects, delivery heads, and client partners. Now here's the DARK truth. The bottom of the pyramid TESTING, BOILERPLATE, MAINTENANCE is EXACTLY what AI is best at. Not good. Not decent. AI is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST in the world at it. Which means the widest bottom of the widest pyramid in the world is COLLAPSING RIGHT NOW. And the numbers PROVE it. India's middle-class dream is CRACKING from the bottom.
So in this case study, I want to answer three questions that will change how every Indian ENGINEER thinks about their future. Why is the Indian IT industry the machine that lifted MILLIONS out of poverty suddenly BREAKING before our eyes? Which SPECIFIC IT jobs is AI killing right now and which jobs are actually SAFE? And most importantly if you're an engineering student, an IT professional, or a parent of one what should you be doing RIGHT NOW to survive this disruption? Because Bain & Company projects that India will need 2.3 MILLION AI professionals by 2027 but we'll only have 1.2 MILLION. The bottom of the pyramid is dying. But the top is BIGGER than ever.
