Germany is set to reintroduce voluntary military service for 18-year-olds from January under a new law.The move is part of a wider push across Europe to increase conscription and defence readiness.
It comes as countries respond to growing security concerns linked to Russia’s war on Ukraine.
German officials say the scheme aims to strengthen the armed forces without full compulsory service.
The plan has sparked debate over youth participation, security needs and civil liberties.
Other European states are taking similar steps to boost troop numbers and preparedness.
