Canada-US relations face more setbacks as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's administration puts the deal for 88 American-made F-35 stealth fighter jets under political review. Canada has now turned to Sweden and is exploring the purchase of SAAB Gripen jets to replace its aging fleet of F-18 Hornets. This comes after US President Donald Trump put tariffs on Canada and called it the 51st state of America. Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly called Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney — the Governor of Canada, sparking tensions further. Now, Canada has signed a deal with SAAB for the supply of six Global Eye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) systems, rejecting Boeing's offer and costing the US billions of dollars. Meanwhile, Canadian officials have also urged Lockheed Martin to invest more in the country if they want to secure the entire deal for the F-35 jets which could now be capped to just 30 aircraft. Meanwhile, SAAB has offered local manufacturing and greater control to Canada for the Gripen and a discount if Ottawa decides to combine the Gripen with the Global Eye purchase.
