Insiden tersebut dipicu lantaran seorang penceramah kondang di India, Bhole Baba alias Narayan Sakaar mengaku-ngaku sebagai dewa.
Adapun festival Satsang ini digelar di Provinsi Uttar Pradesh, India pada Selasa (2/7).
Festival tersebut awalnya dihadiri oleh 250 ribu jemaat dari penjuru India.
Menurut laporan polisi jumlah orang yang hadir lebih dari tiga kali lipat dari kapasitas yang diizinkan.
Insiden maut terjadi setelah khotbah selesai, ribuan jemaat berdesakan ingin keluar menemui sang penceramah yang mengaku sebagai dewa tersebut.
Saksi mata mengaku melihat situasi mengerikan di mana ratusan orang terjatuh dan terinjak-injak.
Jumlah korban tewas akibat insiden ini telah meningkat menjadi 121 orang.
Mayoritas korban adalah perempuan.
"Ketika khotbah selesai, semua orang berlarian," kata Shakuntala, dikutip media lokal India.
Seorang pejabat mengatakan warga yang berdesakan ingin menyentuh kaki Baba.
Sementara media lokal melaporkan para warga berusaha mengumpulkan debu bekas injakan atau ban mobil dari tokoh agama itu.
Atas kejadian ini, PM India Narendra Modi menyampaikan belasungkawa kepada keluarga korban tewas.
Pemerintah akan bekerja sama dengan otoritas negara bagian untuk memastikan korban menerima bantuan.
