Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on ancient history continues with the video on the Sicilian Wars between the Carthaginians and Greeks, a prelude to the First Punic War. Long before Hannibal crossed the Alps, Carthage fought the Greeks for control of Sicily. For nearly two centuries, the island became a battlefield of shattered armies, burning cities, ambitious tyrants, and fragile peace treaties. This full documentary explores the seven Sicilian Wars between Carthage and Syracuse, following the struggle from Gelon’s victory at Himera to the rise of Dionysius, Timoleon’s dramatic intervention, and Agathocles’ daring invasion of North Africa. Discover how Greek hoplites, Carthaginian armies, mercenaries, and powerful fleets fought across one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable islands. We examine the destruction of Selinus and Akragas, the siege of Motya, the battle for Syracuse, and the clash at the Crimissus River. Beyond the battlefield, shifting alliances and political upheaval repeatedly transformed victories into disasters. Greeks fought alongside Carthaginians, generals abandoned their allies, and rulers used war to secure power at home. Every peace carried the seeds of another invasion. Why did neither side achieve a lasting victory? How did Syracuse survive repeated invasions? And why did centuries of conflict leave both powers vulnerable to Rome? Follow the campaigns, sieges, and rivalries that shaped ancient Sicily and reveal the struggle behind Carthage’s wars before its famous confrontation with the Roman Republic.
