Depositi di carburante e raffinerie sono stati colpiti, scatenando incendi violenti che hanno bruciato per ore. Le fiamme hanno rilasciato enormi quantità di idrocarburi, ossidi di zolfo e azoto, trasformando il cielo in una coltre opprimente. La mattina dell'8 marzo, i quasi dieci milioni di abitanti si sono svegliati in un'oscurità innaturale: il sole era nascosto da una densa nube nera di fumo tossico. Le strade, i tetti, le auto e i balconi si sono coperti di fuliggine appiccicosa. Poi è arrivata la pioggia "nera".
La Mezzaluna Rossa iraniana ha diramato allarmi urgenti: la pioggia potrebbe essere acida e contaminata da composti tossici, rischiando ustioni chimiche sulla pelle e gravi danni ai polmoni. Le autorità ambientali hanno confermato un picco di inquinamento senza precedenti, con fumi che persistono e minacciano la salute a lungo termine, forse oltre i confini nazionali. Il tutto avviene nella stessa epoca della transizione verde, del Green Deal, delle ZTL e delle domeniche ecologiche. Ma sul disastro ambientale avvenuto in Iran, nessuna dichiarazione sembra essere arrivata dai leader occidentali, che molte volte nel recente passato hanno condannato la popolazione per l'arrivo del cambiamento climatico.
