Evrendeki en sıradışı oluşum dediğimizde neredeyse herkesin aklına kara delikler gelir. Var olması bile insanın aklının sınırlarını zorlayan uzay zamandaki dev gizemler. En azından çok uzun süre gizemlerdi. Hatta 1783’de John Mitchell tarafından teorik olarak “var olabilecekleri” öne sürüldüğünde herkes bu fikrin gereğinden fazla çılgın olduğuna, o kadar da olmayacağına inanıyordu.John Mitchell aslında basit bir çıkarım yapmıştı o zaman. Düşüncesi şu şekildeydi. Büyüklüğü ve kütlesi belirli bir seviyenin üstünde olan herhangi bir yıldızın kütleçekimi o kadar yüksek olacaktı ki bu kütleçekiminden hiçbir şey, hatta ışık bile kaçamazdı ve bir “karanlık yıldızla” karşı karşıya kalacaktık.
1964 yılında ise bilim insanları bir uzay görevi sırasında Kuğu takım yıldızından gelen sıradışı bir x-ışını kaynağını inceledikten sonra John Mitchell’in haklı olduğu anlaşılacaktı. Görünmeyen bir cismin etrafında dönen bir yıldızı inceleyen bilim insanları Cygnus X-1 adını verdikleri, gözlemlerle kanıtlanan ilk Kara Deliği bulacaklardı.
Ondan sonra bu kara deliklerin sanılandan da yaygın olduğu, neredeyse tüm galaksilerin merkezinde süper kütleli bir kara delik bulunduğu keşfedilecekti.
