German FM warns Israel will face int'l isolation if it does not 'act now' to surge aid into Gaza
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in Jerusalem that the humanitarian disaster in Gaza is "beyond imagination" and urged Israel to "quickly and safely send sufficient humanitarian and medical aid to avoid mass deaths." Wadephul said Germany sees recognizing a Palestinian state "at the end of a process of a negotiation, a process that must, however, begin soon." He further warned that a "gap" may be opening between Israel and the European Union, calling on "both sides" to make sure that this did not happen.Israel is under mounting international pressure to agree to a ceasefire and allow a surge in food aid into the Gaza Strip, where UN-backed experts have reported "famine is now unfolding." Wadephul is currently on a two-day trip in Israel that will also take him to the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
