Conor McGregor Devastating Knee Injury (HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED)
Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon ended in devastating fashion tonight when his knee buckled during the opening moments of his UFC 329 rematch against Max Holloway.McGregor attempted a jumping roundhouse kick, came down awkwardly on the supporting leg and immediately appeared to lose stability in the knee. He tried to continue, but the leg could no longer support him and the fight was stopped just 69 seconds into the first round.
UFC President Dana White said following the fight that the initial belief is that McGregor suffered a torn ACL. Until MRI results are released, however, the exact structures involved and the full severity of the injury remain unconfirmed.
As a physical therapist, I’m breaking down the injury frame by frame to show you the likely mechanism. We’ll look at the position of McGregor’s planted foot, the rotation occurring through the lower leg, the direction the knee collapsed and why this combination can place enormous stress on the ACL, MCL and meniscus.
I’ll also explain why an athlete can sometimes initially try to continue after an ACL injury, what additional damage doctors will be looking for and what a realistic recovery could mean for McGregor’s fighting future.
In an unbelievable twist, McGregor also tore his ACL during his original 2013 fight against Max Holloway. That night, he managed to finish the fight and earn a unanimous-decision victory. Thirteen years later, another knee injury against the same opponent brought his comeback to an abrupt and heartbreaking end.
This video is an educational analysis based on the visible injury mechanism and currently available reports. A definitive diagnosis can only be made following an examination and appropriate medical imaging.
