Undercover at Pakistan’s Largest Thieves Market
Would you dare to explore one of Pakistan's most infamous black markets, where counterfeit PlayStations, vintage electronics and all sorts of bizarre goods are piled in crowded street stalls? In this video, I head to Allah Wali Market in Karachi, Pakistan, a sprawling market locally known as Chor Bazaar, or the Thieves Market. Stretching for nearly a kilometre, this is no ordinary shopping destination. From mountains of second-hand electronics to unusual street stalls and unexpected discoveries, you never quite know what you'll find around the next corner.
Because of the market's reputation, I'm filming as discreetly as possible as I explore its crowded lanes and investigate what's for sale. The name Thieves Market doesn't mean everything sold here is stolen. However, the sheer variety of goods and their questionable origins raise interesting questions about the trade in second-hand merchandise and counterfeit products.
This video is a look at the market and its unusual character, not a promotion of stolen or counterfeit goods. I'm here to document what I find, show viewers a side of Karachi they might never otherwise see, and explore the reality of this unusual marketplace.
A word of warning: be very careful with the unusual potions and remedies sold at markets like this. You often don't know exactly what's in them, how they're made, or whether they're safe to consume. Don't take anything just because a seller claims it has medicinal benefits. If you can't verify what's in it, it's best to leave it alone!
Inside Allah Wali Market (aka UP market), I discover mountains of discarded electronics, old computer parts and retro gaming consoles, including PlayStations and a Sega Mega Drive. I also find vintage VHS players, cassette decks, audio equipment and old-school technology, alongside second-hand clothes, questionable designer knockoffs and a huge variety of merchandise.
There are also strange books, old movie collections, counterfeit gaming devices and all sorts of random goods. Among the unexpected sights are street food stalls serving affordable local meals and a man offering to clean people's teeth right on the street!
Many of the items are dusty, damaged or in poor condition, and there's no guarantee that old electronics will even work. The market offers a fascinating look at the sheer volume of goods circulating through second-hand markets, along with the challenges of identifying counterfeit products and determining where merchandise originally came from.
Allah Wali Market is located in New Karachi Town, in the northern part of Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. The market was originally known as UP Market and has grown into a sprawling marketplace stretching for nearly a kilometre. Although the exact history of the market and when its name changed remain difficult to verify, it has become a distinctive part of New Karachi's busy commercial landscape.
Would you have expected to find a market like this in Pakistan? Let me know what surprised you most in the comments!
