While teaching machine learning at the University of Nairobi as a Fulbright Professor, he and Eric Horvitz founded the AAAI Artificial Intelligence for Development symposium, bringing together leading AI researchers working on development challenges across Africa, Asia, and South America. Eagle is currently reformulating the initiative as a collaboration with major tech companies to ensure that the latest advances in AI will benefit the underserved populations most in need of this transformative ‘leapfrog’ technology.

AI, Developing World, Development Nathan Eagle is a computer scientist and entrepreneur who has been at the forefront of harnessing smartphones and AI to empower underserved regions globally. As the founder and CEO of Jana, Eagle raised $100 million over ten years to scale the company into the largest provider of free internet in emerging markets. Previously, as a Visiting Assistant Professor at MIT and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Computational Epidemiology at Harvard, Eagle developed machine learning-based methods trained on population-level mobile phone data to guide the allocation of malaria eradication resources across Africa. His academic work includes over 100 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Science and Nature, accumulating more than 15,000 citations; his book from MIT Press, Reality Mining: Using Big Data to Engineer a Better World, won the American Publishers PROSE Award. In recognition of his work with the World Bank on AI and mobile crowdsourcing, Eagle was awarded the prestigious Kiel Global Economy Prize alongside Daniel Kahneman. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
