Island ist bekannt für seine grandiose Natur, seine Vulkane, Geysire und Wasserfälle, ein Paradies für Touristen aus aller Welt. Weniger bekannt ist, dass Island zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der NATO gehört, aber weder eine Armee noch ein Verteidigungsbudget hat.Während des Kalten Kriegs spielte es eine wichtige Rolle bei der Überwachung des Luftraums und der Detektion russischer U-Boote im Nordatlantik, denn die Insel liegt an einem marinen Nadelöhr genannt GIUK-Lücke (benannt nach den drei Ländern Grönland, Island und Großbritannien) zwischen dem Arktischen und dem Atlantischen Ozean. Dieses Gebiet ist bis heute von großer strategischer Bedeutung für die USA, Sicherheitsexperten bezeichnen Island deshalb gerne als "unsinkbaren Flugzeugträger" inmitten des Nordatlantik.
Heute jedoch blickt Island mit Sorge auf ein verändertes sicherheitspolitisches Umfeld: Einerseits ist da die umfassende Invasion Russlands in der Ukraine sowie eine verstärkte militärische Präsenz russischer Soldaten in der Arktis. Andererseits Drohungen von US-Präsident Donald Trump gegen Verbündete, etwa Grönland und die NATO als Ganzes. Die isländische Regierung muss sich neu orientieren, vor allem die Frage beantworten: Ist noch Verlaß auf die USA als Sicherheitsgarant?
Die isländische Ministerpräsidentin Kristrún Frostadóttir hat eine Erhöhung der Verteidigungsausgaben angekündigt. Die nordischen Länder wollen ihre sicherheitspolitische Kooperation vertiefen. Zudem richtet Island den Blick auf die Europäische Union, es gibt einen Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspartnerschaft, sogar neue Beitrittsverhandlungen sind möglich. Wie also stellt sich Island auf das neue geopolitische Umfeld ein, obwohl es über keine eigene Armee verfügt?
