Tens of thousands flee Ethiopia's Oromia-Somali clashes into Kenya

Tens of thousands of people have fled southern Ethiopia into neighbouring Kenya after fighting erupted between forces from the Oromia and Somali regions in the border town of Moyale. The clashes have reignited a decades-long dispute over territory, grazing land and water resources, forcing families to abandon their homes and seek shelter in schools and other temporary facilities. The Kenya Red Cross says it is organising assistance for at least 30,000 displaced people, many of whom have gone days without food. Refugees describe fleeing under cover of darkness and struggling to access food, shelter, clothing and medical treatment, particularly for pregnant women and children. The conflict has erupted repeatedly since Ethiopia redrew its internal boundaries along ethnic lines in the 1990s, leaving the disputed border around Moyale unresolved. Ethiopian government troops have yet to stop the fighting, while the military faces rebellions in several regions and rising tensions with neighbouring Eritrea. With humanitarian aid budgets shrinking and no sign of an end to the violence, displaced families face growing uncertainty over when they can return home and how long assistance will remain available.

Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb reports from Moyale, Kenya.
