After William the Conqueror’s victory at Hastings in 1066, England was transformed from an Anglo-Saxon kingdom into a land ruled by a French-speaking Norman elite. But why did the Anglo-Saxons, who vastly outnumbered their conquerors, fail to restore native rule? This video explores the turbulent years after the Norman Conquest, when surviving English nobles, exiles, Danish invaders, Scottish allies, and local rebels repeatedly challenged William’s authority. From Eadric the Wild’s guerrilla war in the west to the defiance of Exeter, from Edgar Atheling’s attempts to rally resistance to the great northern revolt at York, Anglo-Saxon opposition was fierce but fragmented. William answered with castles, political replacement, military force, and finally the devastating Harrying of the North, a scorched-earth campaign that broke organized resistance in northern England. The video also examines why no later mass uprising emerged: the destruction and exile of the native aristocracy, the Norman takeover of land and Church, the strategic use of castles, and the limited immediate impact on many peasants. In the long run, Norman rule reshaped England’s language, elite society, architecture, and political order for centuries.
