La Guerra del Golfo non comincia nel 1990. Comincia molto prima, dentro una storia fatta di confini tracciati male, rivalità regionali, interessi economici, petrolio, debiti di guerra e ambizioni politiche.In questa prima parte ricostruiamo il rapporto tra Iraq e Kuwait, partendo dalle origini storiche della loro tensione: il passato ottomano e coloniale, la questione dei confini, il peso strategico del Golfo Persico, il ruolo del petrolio e il modo in cui Saddam Hussein arrivò a considerare il Kuwait non come uno Stato vicino, ma come un problema da risolvere.
Vedremo come la lunga guerra tra Iraq e Iran abbia lasciato Baghdad economicamente stremata, politicamente aggressiva e sempre più convinta di poter scaricare sul Kuwait le proprie difficoltà. Una spirale che, tra accuse reciproche, crisi diplomatica e calcoli sbagliati, condurrà fino al momento decisivo: l’invasione del Kuwait del 2 agosto 1990.
Questa è la storia di come si prepara una guerra.
E di come un conflitto apparentemente regionale finisce per cambiare gli equilibri del mondo.
