From Know Your Customer to Know Your Reality in the Age of AI | Mr. Smarak Swain | TEDxKPRCAS
In this thought-provoking TEDx talk, Mr. Smarak Swain explores how the concept of trust is being transformed in an age shaped by artificial intelligence. Drawing from his experiences in taxation, financial investigations, and public policy, he examines the evolution of Know Your Customer (KYC) systems and why they remain critical in protecting individuals and institutions from fraud.Through real-world examples of cybercrime, mule accounts, identity theft, and AI-generated deepfakes, he reveals how rapidly advancing technology is challenging traditional methods of verification. As digital impersonation becomes increasingly sophisticated, he argues that trust can no longer be taken for granted and that verification is becoming a personal responsibility as much as an institutional one.
Connecting the history of KYC with emerging AI-driven threats, Smarak highlights the importance of digital awareness, critical thinking, and informed skepticism in navigating an increasingly complex world.
This talk offers valuable insights into trust, cybersecurity, financial security, and the future of identity in the digital age. As artificial intelligence reshapes how we communicate, transact, and verify information, Smarak invites us to rethink what it means to establish trust—and why learning to question, verify, and understand our digital reality has never been more important. Smarak Swain is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and an author specializing in taxation, financial investigations, and economic policy. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, he holds a Master’s degree in Taxation and Business Laws from NALSAR University. Swain has worked extensively in tax administration, transfer pricing, and corporate investigations. He has authored several books and articles on finance, governance, and tax transparency, contributing to publications such as The Economic Times, Mint, and Asia Times.
