Little Boy was the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare. Developed by the Manhattan Project during World War II, it was a gun-type fission weapon that used uranium-235. On August 6, 1945, it was dropped by the B-29 bomber Enola Gay on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, exploding with a force of about 15 kilotons of TNT. Its blast and radiation killed tens of thousands instantly and many more in the aftermath.

Unlike the more complex implosion design of the later Fat Man bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Little Boy’s design was simpler but inefficient—using 64 kg of uranium, yet less than a kilogram actually underwent fission. The weapon was assembled under Lieutenant Commander Francis Birch’s group at Los Alamos. It was never tested before its use, as scientists were confident it would work.

Little Boy's devastating impact not only contributed to Japan’s surrender but also ushered in the nuclear age, forever changing global warfare and geopolitics.
